Stevenson vs. Pascal Possible in April

The trash talk has been confined to twitter and facebook, but word is the bad blood percolating between WBC light-heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson and top-rated contender Jean Pascal could soon be for real as plans are being set for a clash next April at Montreal’s Bell Centre.

The basic scenario is as follows: Stevenson will fight someone, we don’t know who yet, in December on Showtime. (Some fear it will be a soft touch such as Gabriel Campillo, who the WBC ranks for some reason in their top 10.) Meanwhile, that same venue is booked on April 4 by Stevenson’s promoter Yvon Michel, who has let it be known that such a date could work perfectly for a big battle between Montreal’s two top fighters and that serious negotiations could start in January.

Pascal and Stevenson: headed for an April showdown.

Pascal, who is in fact “Superman’s” mandatory challenger under WBC rules, has been calling out Stevenson of late (in unintentionally humorous fashion), and adding credence to the buzz of an April meeting is Stevenson responding to his rival on facebook with the following:

Jean Pascal you are just a sparring Partner for [Artur] Beterbiev. At least Beterbiev is not running away from Tavoris Cloud like you did twice in the past. Now stay next to the phone and wait for Daddy to call you. I will fight your sorry ass …

Needless to say, a Pascal-Stevenson fight would be huge in Montreal, the city where both boxers live and train and where each man’s most significant wins have taken place. Further, this just might have the makings of a great action scrap as both love to throw the big bomb. It was a long time ago, but their lone match in the amateurs, won by Pascal, was not lacking for action. Stay tuned to The Fight City for any further developments.
