Guillermo Rigondeaux: The Way of the Jackal
Controlling distance; mastering timing; setting up the opponent; hitting and not getting hit: that is boxing. And it’s what Guillermo Rigondeaux, the finest pure boxer in the sport, does better than anyone else. Lee Wylie explains.
Fascinating stuff Lee. Thoroughly enjoyed your analysis as ever.
You should make a video on Erislandy Lara, he’s one of the cuban masters of the sweet science and maybe another 1 on floyd.
Interesting stuff….Someone on your site (if it’s not this author) who also wrote that Ali was a master of this as well.
What makes Rigo frustrating from a fan perspective is that he never follows up on his advantages with combinations. He’s in, lands a good shot, then immediately retreats, even against opponents that offer little in terms of a power threat. It may be technically sound and strategically safe, but fans want action, something Rigo seems incapable of providing. In contrast, I think Lomanchenko utilizes similar talents but to much more devastating effect.
All that said, thanks for the video Lee. Your analysis and breakdowns are always very insightful.
