Beyond a Punch: Kovalev-Ward II

Their first meeting was both one of the most eagerly anticipated matches of 2016 and then one of its most controversial: Sergey Kovalev vs Andre Ward. For three of the four major belts in the light heavyweight division and the mythical title of the best pugilist in the world, pound-for-pound. After 12 rounds of intense action between two of the game’s best boxers, the decision went to Andre Ward.

But while it was a tough, close fight, no one can dispute the fact that a clear majority of observers at ringside thought the Russian deserved a better fate. Kovalev scored a knockdown in round two and clearly was the boss in the first half of the match. However, it’s also inarguable that Andre Ward rebounded with some tactical adjustments in the latter part of the battle to make it a highly competitive contest.

Our own Lee Wylie, one of the sharpest boxing analysts on the planet, gave us plenty to think about prior to the first clash last November and now he returns with another of his excellent videos to help us better understand why things unfolded as they did. Boxing fans are already keenly looking forward to June 17 and a rematch which has become something of a grudge match. So watch and let Mr. Wylie help you see how the factors that are likely to decide the outcome for Ward vs Kovalev II are indeed, beyond a punch. Check it out:
