Otis Grant On GGG vs Lemieux
This writer tried but failed to make it out to the Grant Brothers Gym in Montreal earlier today for something called a “Boxe-O-Thon,” though it wasn’t due to lack of interest, but more a lack of sleep as the starting time for the event was 6 am. Hardier souls than Yours Truly, not to mention ones less inclined to nocturnal tendencies, were making the trip and donning hand wraps and gloves to participate to help raise funds for some worthy causes. Good on them.
Our own Manny Montreal somehow made the scene and kudos to him, both for attending and for getting some sharp shots of those in attendance. With former champion Otis Grant hosting, Lucia Larcinese lacing ’em up, and a resurgent Lucian Bute on hand, this was an event not short on star power. Local media were there in force including Breakfast Television’s Wilder Weir who donned the gloves and did some pad work with Otis.
All funds raised went to two very worthy causes. One is connected to Montreal-based lightweight contender Ghislain Maduma who is originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. His “Fondation GMM” is all about raising money to give impoverished children in Africa a chance at life and allowing them to attend school. Meanwhile The Otis Grant and Friends Foundation is well established in Montreal as it raises thousands of dollars each year for families in need.
Check out the video here to learn more and hard-core boxing fans will get a treat: Otis “Magic” Grant, former challenger to Roy Jones Jr. and former WBO champion, giving his take on the upcoming Gennady Golovkin vs David Lemieux showdown, set for next month at Madison Square Garden in New York. Suffice to say, if Lemieux follows Grant’s advice — which boasts some compelling logic — we are in for one hell of a battle on October 17.
